Since I am always on a research trip, here are some of my latest experiences concerning recording equipment. I used to record with a Korg MR-1000. I switched because there were a couple of issues. Firstly: the preamps are too noisy. I don’t mean they are noisy, but just too noisy for my purposes. Secondly there is a high noise at about 50kHz – very annoying if you use it as a sound design tool with lots of pitch shifting. Other issues are the mic pre’s high sensitivity. That’s good for some or most music recordings, bad if you record high gain stuff like cars, they are mostly clipping. You are only able to record stereo, even if you don’t use two channels and no way (like timecode) to sync to another recorder to record more than two channels. Dual mono is also not possible. So I swapped over to the Sound Devices 744T. It is an awesome product with unbelievably good mic preamps. If I record more than two tracks, I use two Sound Devices MP-1 as additional mic preamps (the 744T is a 4 channel, but 2 mic preamps device). Besides some mics I want to talk about later I got a Kortwich field bag for it. I will share my experiences about that in another post – but so far: it is the best bag I have ever used.
